The World’s First Full Process Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage (OCCS) system Case Sharing Seminar, hosted by Shanghai QiYao Environmental Technology Co., Ltd. (QiYao Environ Tec), a subsidiary of CSSC, concluded successfully in Hong Kong on the evening of the 22nd of May. The seminar, themed “Sailing Towards A Greener Tomorrow”, attracted more than 50 elites from shipowners, financial leasing companies, classification societies, universities, and other institutions in the shipping industry. They attended the seminar, delivered remarkable speeches, and discussed the approach of utilizing OCCS to achieve low-carbon or even zero-carbon goals for ships under the increasingly stringent carbon emission regulations. Together, they aim to forge a path towards green shipping.
Mr Zhijian He, director of QiYao Environ Tec, attended the seminar and delivered a speech, stating that as a technology-oriented enterprise adhering to the belief of “green and low carbon ”, QiYao Environ Tec has always been committed to providing comprehensive solutions to greenhouse gas and pollutant reduction in ships, ranging from the “fuel side” to “exhaust side”, for clients. Accordingly, QiYao Environ Tec has pioneered the concept of OCCS, offered innovative ideas for the green transformation of shipping, and realized the commercialization of technological achievements. Early this year, QiYao Environ Tec achieved a significant breakthrough in application by applying a EGCs+OCCS system to the 14,000 TEU container vessel named EVER TOP from Evergreen. The system covers the whole process of carbon dioxide capture, separation, compression, liquefaction, and storage, making it the world’s first full process OCCS system.
The OCCS system designed by QiYao Environ Tec for EVER TOP is not a localized replacement, but rather the world’s first full process OCCS application. This signifies that QiYao Environ Tec has become a pioneer in marine environmental protection equipment, which is not only a major breakthrough for the company, but also the pride for China’s shipbuilding industry.
During the seminar, Mr Simon Chen, the director of the marketing department of QiYao Environ Tec, further introduced the implementation details of the project. He pointed out that after retrofitting, EVER TOP captures and reduces CO2 by 44,000 tons per year, improves CII rating to Class C, and extends the vessel’s service life by at least 12 years. What’s even more noteworthy is that the total cost of this retrofit project is less than half of the one for methanol or ammonia fuel supply system. This indicates that the technology of OCCS may be the most economical for achieving large-scale carbon reduction in the marine industry. Meanwhile, Mr Chen added that QiYao Environ Tec provides an implementable method for the subsequent treatment of captured CO2 as well. At the end of April, EVER TOP carried out the world's first C-tank carbon dioxide shore-side unloading at Shanghai Yangshan Port, a milestone closing the industrial chain for OCCS.
Mr Daniel Song from the Sustainability Center of Bureau Veritas (BV), a French classification society, shared more technical insights into OCCS technology, offering professional perspectives from a marine technical inspection agency. Later, the expert Miss Liu from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, a member of the team led by Professor Jia Li, took a deep dive into the global emission reduction policy for marine industry. And Professor Xue Wang from City University of Hong Kong presented the latest research findings on the reuse of carbon dioxide, highlighting the feasibility and environmental benefits of E-Fuel electrosynthesized from carbon dioxide. This brings a more commercially viable method of handling liquid carbon dioxide captured by OCCS beyond mere seal and storage.
With the rapid changing global trends, the sustainable and low-carbon development of the marine economy has emerged as a pivotal direction for global economic advancement. Qiyao Environ Tec is and will continue to deepen its research on marine environmental protection equipment, constantly iterating and upgrading, bringing forth the new from the old, expanding its global service network, and striving to provide customers with personalized solutions with OCCS system that are “widely applicable, efficient, low-cost, and high-return”. This commitment will help contribute to a bright future of the "blue sea and blue sky".
